Apple’s $2.5 billion pledge makes it the latest tech giant to tackle California’s housing crisis

Apple today announced a pledge of $2.5 billion to combat the housing crisis in its home state of California. It’s the largest commitment of any of the Big Five in the tech industry, all of which have pledged various amounts of money toward helping build more affordable housing in and around the cities they operate near. The only major US tech company who has yet to pledge a significant amount of money toward the issue is Amazon, although Amazon did donate $8 million over the summer to nonprofits that provide housing for the homeless.…

Apple Watch Series 5: Here’s What it May Look Like

An alleged image of the Apple Watch Series 5 has been leaked. According to the image, not much appears to be different. The Watch Series 5 still seems to bear the rounded rectangular design, along with the 3D curved glass on top and the rotating crown to the right for control. If this leak is to be believed, this somewhat confirms that the Apple Watch Series 5 will be more of an incremental upgrade over its predecessor. According to reports on the internet, the Apple Watch Series 5 will feature…

Apple Watch FlickType Gesture Keyboard App Makes Typing A Breeze: Is It Any Good?

A screen as small as an Apple Watch is not designed for written interactions. That didn’t stop rival manufacturers, like Will.i.am and his Dial smartcuff from including a tiny QWERTY onscreen, for instance. But it was hard to type accurately on such a small set of letters. FlickType on Apple Watch, before you type the first letter.DAVID PHELAN So, the recent release of FlickType, a free Apple Watch app, a few months ago, added considerable versatility to the Watch. Healthcare tech firm Epic Systems says it won’t consider any Apple buyout offer

“We’re not going to do that,” Judy Faulkner told Healthcare IT News at a conference earlier this week. “It was just very gratifying that not a single health system contacted us about it and said they were worried. They all said they laughed.” The executive was responding to CNBC “Mad Money” host Jim Cramer, who argued that Apple should buy Epic since it sells medical record software to major U.S. hospitals. Apple launched a Health Records feature in March 2018, allowing encrypted patient data to be saved in the iOS Health app for quick access…

Apple can reach $1 trillion again if it launches a “media bundle” in 2019, says Morgan Stanley

As Apple rebounds from its first earnings call predicated with a guidance revision in 16 years, many analysts remain skeptical of the company’s ability to regain its trillion-dollar status. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, however, offers a different take, via CNBC.  Huberty believes that if Apple successfully launches a so called “media bundle” in 2019, comprised of music, television streaming and a Texture news subscription, the company will see significant growth as the bank currently targets AAPL’s 12 month share price at $211. For reference, AAPL closed at just over $166 on Friday with a $785 billion market cap.…

Estimated Samsung Galaxy F bill of materials shows why it will cost $1,800

Korean agency CGS-CIMB Research has posted a report in which it estimates the Bill of Materials (BOM) for the foldable Galaxy F and compares it to a Galaxy S9+ and an iPhone XS Max. The priciest item is the display – or should we say “displays”. The Galaxy F will have one large 7.3” panel that folds down the middle along with an external 4.58” display. There will reportedly be two batteries as well, though that doesn’t add much to the cost (total capacity is expected to be around 5,000-6,000mAh).…

Sony Mobile will let go 200 staff from Swedish office as it tries to halve costs

Sony Mobile has been losing money and market share and the parent company has come up with a plan to address the first part – it will cut the division’s expenses in half over the next several years. This starts with a round of downsizing at the office in Lund, Sweden. This office was formerly the HQ of Sony Mobile, but that moved to Tokyo years ago. Still, the Lund office employs some 1,200 people. There aren’t many details known, but it seems like 800 of those are directly employed…

Latest iPad Pro commercial wants you to think of it as a computer

Ever since Apple announced the iPad Pro last year, the company has been pretty insistent on trying to sell it as a computer replacement, maybe not for everything (since Apple does still make actual computer) but for basic tasks at least. The latest iPad Pro commercial tries to hammer down that idea further. It talks about how you can type on the keyboard like a regular computer but then it goes out of the way you don’t need it. It has a touchscreen and you can write on it. You…
