After announcing the Galaxy Tab S6 flagship tablet last week, Samsung has now unveiled the Galaxy Watch Active 2 as the company builds up to its Galaxy Note 10 event on August 7. The newest smartwatch succeeds the Galaxy Watch Active after just six months, bringing some notable and much-needed improvements. The highlight of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 has to be its rotating touch-based bezel. Additionally, the Watch Active 2 comes in two sizes, runs on One UI, offers improved health and wellness features, and supports LTE and ECG, among other things. The Watch Active 2 will go on sale in the US starting September 27 starting at USD 279 (approx Rs 19,700).
The Galaxy Watch Active successor comes in 44mm and 40mm sizes and comes in two styles – lightweight aluminium with casual Fluoroelastomer (FKM) Band, and solid stainless steel with a leather strap. The 40mm Watch Active 2 offers a 1.2-inch 360×360 Super AMOLED display with full colour Always On support and Gorilla Glass DX+ protection. The 44mm variant features a 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display.
One complaint about the previous Galaxy Watch Active was that it missed out on Samsung’s much-loved rotating bezel. With the Watch Active 2, the company is offering a new touch-based rotating bezel. You will be able to directly touch the black border of the display and rotate both clockwise and counter-clockwise to navigate through the UI. Samsung adds that the One UI software also offers a “simple, clear and natural user experience for navigation.”
As much as Samsung has created an attractive and intuitive new smartwatch on the outside, the Watch Active 2 is just as attractive on the inside as it offers over 39 workouts with seven of them – running, walking, cycling, swimming, rowing machine, elliptical machine and dynamic workouts – that can be automatically activated upon detection. The Watch Active 2 also packs new health sensors on the back for improved readings.
Another upgrade to the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is that it also comes in LTE models that will allow you to make and receive calls and receive notifications from social media app without needing your smartphone with you. Additionally, the Watch Active 2 now also supports Electrocardiogram (ECG), which will likely be available only in some markets. As mentioned, the new Galaxy Watch Active will go on sale in the US next month, and there is no word on its availability in India just yet.
The previous Watch Active launched in India only recently priced at Rs 19,990 and is currently being sold on Amazon India and the Samsung India website. In our review of the Watch Active, we said that this is one of the better smartwatches to buy under Rs 20,000. While we missed the rotating bezel, the Watch Active offers a lightweight, comfortable and helpful fitness features along with an attractive AMOLED display.
